The Judicial Council of California has ordered the coordination of multiple lawsuits against OpenAI arising from its GPT-4o product, consolidating the cases into a Judicial Council Coordination Proceeding (JCCP No. 5431).
The coordinated proceeding, titled ChatGPT Product Liability Cases, brings together actions filed across several California counties, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Alameda, and San Diego. The court found that the cases involve common questions of law and fact and qualify as complex litigation appropriate for coordination.
The proceedings will be centralized in the Superior Court of California, County of San Francisco, streamlining pretrial litigation and addressing shared issues related to allegations that GPT-4o is a defective product. This coordination marks a significant procedural development, positioning the litigation to more efficiently address systemic claims regarding the design, deployment, and harms associated with OpenAI’s chatbot products.
